A Ayyappan (profile)

A. Ayyappan (born 27th Oct 1949 - Died on 22 Oct 2010), is a Malayalam poet in the modernist period. Born in a wealthy goldsmith's family,in Neman near Thiruvanathapuram. His father committed suicide taking poison when he was only 1year of age. His mother committed suicide when he was 15, which is said to have been an attempt for abortion. Ayyappan was supported by his sister Subbalakshmi and his brother-in-law V. Krishnan.
Ayyappan started writing poetry when he was a student. He became involved in the Communist Party and joined the staff of Janayugam, the party newspaper. Ayyappan is well known for his heart touching poems and his bohemian lifestyle. He can also be considered as the last remaining icon of anarchism in Kerala. He was a close friend of the late filmmaker John Abraham.He won the Asan Puraskaram, the highest literary award in malayalam literature from kerala for the year 2010. His body was found abandoned in the streats of Thampanoor, Trivandrum on 21st october 2010 and was identified by police in General hospital by 12 noon on 22nd October 2010. It was reported that death was due to Vehicle accident. He was on the way to Chennai to accept the Asan Puraskaram on 23rd october 2010 Saturday. Being an abusive drinker he was found unconcious once before and was taken to Pathanapuram gandhi bhavan for treatment.

  2. He showed us what ultimate freedom means. He chose his paths knowing well the consequences therefrom, undeterred. Above all he was a terrific poet. Only a few are born this way who can lead a selfless life with no strings attached.
